BY THE EARLY 70s researchers had developed powerful algorithms for displaying digital images (such as .jpg). To prove these algorithms worked, they needed a benchmark image for their research papers.

A Playboy centrefold of ‘Lena’ was taken down off a lab wall at the University of Southern California, scanned and became the seminal diagnostic reference for which now over 250,000+ research papers have cited. This original scan of Lena is still the most used reference test image in the world, for any industry.

A social movement to reflect on the continued use of the Lena image was created, centred around a feature documentary to help millions of women feel more welcome in STEM industries.
