BY THE EARLY 70s researchers had developed powerful algorithms for displaying digital images (such as .jpg). To prove these algorithms worked, they needed a benchmark image for their research papers.

A Playboy centrefold called Lena happened to be stuck on a lab wall at The University of Southern California. It was taken down, scanned and now with over 250k + research papers having used this image since, Lena is still the most used reference test image in the world, in any industry.

A social movement to reflect on the continued use of the Lena image was created, centred around a feature documentary to help millions of women feel more welcome in STEM industries.

Lena is now officially lost: The Guardian
